Leadership For Kids: A Children’s Story (+ 6 Leadership Quotes For Kids)

Leadership for kids: Teach kids to lead or someone else will – and it could be in the wrong direction

I find it agonizing to fumble my way through important life lessons that I need to teach my daughter.  In spite of the fact that we can’t predict what a child’s questions will be (Dad, what’s a feminist,’ my 10-year-old asked me this morning), we can at least broaden our knowledge and wisdom base so that we have more potential answers at our disposal.

Enter leadership.

Leadership is one of those sticky topics. Think “Are leaders born or made?” What would you tell your kid? “What is a good leader,” or “What is a leader?” What would you say? Even if they never ask you that question point blank, it is important to at least point them in the right direction. Our job, after all, is to help guide them in the right direction so that they live their best lives possible, right?

No need for a definitive answer on leadership, though it’d make for some good philosophical banter

The most important thing is for us to help our children become leaders because whether they are born with the ability or will be “made” into leaders is irrelevant. At some point in time, everyone will either find themselves in a leadership position or need to channel some of the qualities that a good and effective leader has.

Further, teaching leadership skills to kids provides a strong foundation for them to become confident, successful people in the future. By teaching leadership skills to children, we can give them the confidence and tools they need to make positive changes in their lives and the world around them.

Here are some tips:

  • Be a good role model. Children learn by watching the adults in their lives. Be the kind of leader you want your child to be.
  • Give them opportunities to lead. The best way to learn how to lead is by doing. Give your child opportunities to lead in different settings, such as at home, at school, or in extracurricular activities.
  • Help them develop their communication skills. Good leaders are able to communicate effectively with others. Teach your child how to listen carefully, express their ideas clearly, and give feedback respectfully.
  • Provide them with feedback. Give one-on-one feedback about your child’s ability to lead and how they did as a leader.
